Historical Fencing Beginner’s Course for Ages 14-19

Interested in fencing, martial arts or history? Come and try historical fencing!

Historical European Martial Arts, or HEMA, is a combat sport and martial art in which practitioners learn to use and fence with historical weapons. Training is based on surviving fencing treatises from the Middle Ages and early modern period, practised today as a modern combat sport.

Our six-week beginner’s course for 14-19-year-olds offers an opportunity to discover the sport together with others of a similar age.

The course covers the fundamentals of historical fencing and armed combat. Participants will practise skills such as using a sword safely and efficiently, movement and decision-making in a fencing situation, and practical historical techniques. Training sessions include sport-specific warm-ups, fencing games, technical exercises, instruction and, of course, sparring with a range of historical weapons.

Tuesdays, 18:30-20:00, 6 October - 10 November 2026

EHMS, Suvilahdenkatu 10 C, Helsinki

We ask the guardians of minors to fill in and sign a consent form and hand it in no later than the first class. We also require a guardian to accompany the minor in person during the first two weeks of the course so that we can discuss expectations and any possible limitations regarding the training.

Come and discover historical fencing!

EHMS ry is a non-profit historical fencing club founded in 2010. Our training emphasises safety, respect for training partners and a positive training environment.
